Each of the above shown 3 wood carving works of art, the Baku, the Elephant, and the two men, each of these come from a very old Japanese collection. From my many years of experience, I can say that the quality is very high and that such items are quite rare - these seem to come from a Japanese Jinja Shrine (a Shinto Shrine, not a Buddhist Shrine). Baku, the carving or state with the long curving nose, are said to give you good dreams. The Japanese thought the elephant to be an amusing animal from very far away but, having never seen one, portray them with something less than perfect accuracy.

The two men playing the long Shakuhachi or flutes and holding a straight Ken or sword--- I am really not sure yet exactly what they are. Perhaps a customer could help? Are they tomb gods? To play music in the afterlife? Are they Japanese? Ainu? Chinese? Korean? I have found works of art from all such countries inside Japan, and collected, and sold them, but still think that, being associated in a collected with the Zou and the Baku, that they SHOULD be Japanese... but they are so unlike anything I have had before I cannot say more just yet. *** They must be Chinese as the faces are Chinese ...

These are museum quality Japanese Antique Jinja wood carvings ... Not expensive --- Price On Request.
