Ainu Culture and Art

Japanese Art, Antiques, Eskimo Carvings, Ainu Mask,

Hi there; my name is James R Miller and I live and work in Tokyo Japan. As of 1020, I have collected, bought, and sold Japanese Art and Antiques for about 40 years!

I created this page since I was researching a very rare Ainu Mask that I have, and thought these color scans of a Japanese Scroll from 1787 (TENMEI period) were quite amazing and beautiful, so I wanted a few people in the world to have access to them, and so I quickly threw together this page ......... Hope you enjoy it. Those pictured are, I believe, Ainu chieftains, in their native costumes, from the late Edo period, when Japan was just encroaching on Hokkaido. As with the American Indians, and the American Inuit or Eskimos, it is very sad --- the Ainu of Hokkaido have been thrust aside and their traditions and homeland nearly lost in the modern era .........
